Overview

The book initially describes the basic principles underpinning the cognitive-behavioural model and how they relate to the development, maintenance and modification of delusions and hallucinations. It then considers how to talk to people about their psychotic experiences in the most helpful way, how to improve the therapeutic alliance and how to overcome problems of engagement that may occur during therapy. The use of CBT principles and strategies to modify delusional beliefs and auditory hallucinations is then described, and how to decide which modifications are the most beneficial and achievable in the individual case. This is followed by a discussion of how to maintain the therapeutic gains in the long term, and the book concludes with reviews of the literature and provides key references for evidence-based practice.
