Overview
This volume assesses the implementation of the EU's cohesion policy and the role that the policy has in stimulating ten new member states from eastern and southern European countries to join the EU in 2004 and in attracting another three to four countries that will join in the near future.
Synopsis
Given the recent voting results from France and Germany, one may wonder exactly how cohesive the European Union can be. However, as Leonardi (European Institute, London School of Economics) points out, 2004 saw the largest expansion of the EU to date, with other nations anxious to join as soon as possible. He also maintains that reunification of the European continent is based on a policy of peace and prosperity, that raising the level of well-being through trade is a primary principle, that the EU is primed as a major financial and economic force, and that the European Constitution has been an ongoing project for some time. Given these elements, and the fact that cohesion and solidarity benefits all involved, Leonardi sees continued expansion toward the south and east, and the success of the EU's cohesion policy to be a very real possibility.
