Overview

British poet Samuel Coleridge (1772-1834) is of interest as a theologian and a political theorist, says Gregory (church history, Episcopal Theological Seminary of the Southwest, Austin, Texas) because he mounted an important critique of reductionist explanations of human society and moral agency. He cites his defense of the will against associationism, his criticism of Enlightenment historiography, his discussion of the inadequacies of political economy, and the Trinitarian arguments against monism.
