Overview

This volume will help you acquire and manage a strong collection for your library, even when budgets are being cut. Topics covered include purchasing materials, formulating selection criteria, sharing materials with other institutions, and evaluating and preserving materials. This edition by the late Elizabeth Futas begins with the results of the author's survey of academic and public libraries. The author then explains how a sharply focused and clearly articulated collections development policy can assist libraries in providing the best possible service in the most cost-effective manner. These and other ideas, practices, and policies in this new edition will allow libraries to continue meeting the needs of their particular constituents, even in uncertain economic times.

Incl. full library policy statements.

Editorials

Library Journal

This is the third edition of Futas's well-known Library Acquisition Policies and Procedures, though the title has been updated to reflect the broader terminology of collection development. Four complete collection development policy statements are reprinted, along with excerpts from 61 others, covering missions, goals, objectives, fund allocation, selection policy, selection responsibility, collection levels, selection criteria, approval plans, gifts, legal issues, intellectual freedom, consortia, collection maintenance, and subjects and formats of material. A survey by Futas of 5000 public and academic libraries netted 357 replies from which the excerpts were selected. Of special interest in this edition is material on selection criteria for electronic resources and online services. Futas was a professor and director of the Graduate School of Library and Information Studies at the University of Rhode Island, with nearly three decades of library and teaching experience. (Sadly, she died suddenly last month while attending the American Library Association Midwinter Meeting in Philadelphia). This would be a fine textbook for a collection development class, and it should also be studied by librarians actively engaged in collection development, particularly those who are revising or composing their policies.-Margaret Sylvia, St. Mary's Univ. Academic Lib., San Antonio
