This is the third edition of Futas's well-known Library Acquisition Policies and Procedures, though the title has been updated to reflect the broader terminology of collection development. Four complete collection development policy statements are reprinted, along with excerpts from 61 others, covering missions, goals, objectives, fund allocation, selection policy, selection responsibility, collection levels, selection criteria, approval plans, gifts, legal issues, intellectual freedom, consortia, collection maintenance, and subjects and formats of material. A survey by Futas of 5000 public and academic libraries netted 357 replies from which the excerpts were selected. Of special interest in this edition is material on selection criteria for electronic resources and online services. Futas was a professor and director of the Graduate School of Library and Information Studies at the University of Rhode Island, with nearly three decades of library and teaching experience. (Sadly, she died suddenly last month while attending the American Library Association Midwinter Meeting in Philadelphia).
