Designed to fill a need for core reference material to those doing research on collecting and collections, Pearce (pro-vice-chancellor, U. of Leicester, UK) and her colleagues have assembled and edited an array of collecting-related documents. Volume 3 is devoted to the 19th and 20th centuries up to c.1960. The material includes documents on the founding of museums, their collecting and exhibition policies, reports on exhibitions, the letters of collectors and excavators, individual collectors, the treatment of museum and other collections in popular literature, and imaginary treatment in literature.
