Collins Cobuild Active English Dictionary

Collins COBUILD Active English has been designed for intermediate learners of English wishing to speak, write and read English with confidence. This handy, pocket size dictionary contains the 6,000 most important words in English, each one illustrated by an example from the Bank of English showing context and usage. All explanations are given in simple, natural English, and set grammatical patterns and structures are highlighted to give users maximum help with English usage.

The Collins Cobuild line was developed specifically to meet the needs of ESL learners. The series includes a comprehensive range of dictionaries, grammar resources, and usage books featuring real English as it is written and spoken today.

Through a collaborative initiative, Collins COBUILD and Heinle are co-publishing a dynamic new line of learner's dictionaries offering unparalleled pedagogy and learners' resources. The first Collins COBUILD dictionary was published in 1987, thanks in part to John Sinclair, one of the very first modern corpus linguists who personally oversaw the creation of the Bank of English. Every COBUILD dictionary is based on the Bank of English, a huge electronic database of both written and spoken language, which today contains over 650 million words.
