Description: This is an excellent presentation of the multitude of lower extremity disorders encountered daily in a podiatric practice. This second edition is well organized in its presentation.
Purpose: The purpose is to give the internist a resource, overview, and appreciation of foot disorders. Although not a comprehensive text, the book does introduce the primary care physician to podiatric pathology, diagnostic techniques, and treatment modalities.
Audience: It is intended for medical students, residents, and physicians. It meets the goal of being written for a broad audience. Authored by MDs and DPMs together, most aspects of podiatric medicine in primary care are discussed.
Features: The illustrations complement the text well. They are appropriately organized and facilitate understanding the described conditions and procedures. There is a brief reference section at the end of each chapter to guide the reader to more detailed resources. The book is well organized. Beginning with anatomy and the physical exam, subsequent chapters discuss various subspecialties of podiatric medicine. Included are sections on forefoot, rearfoot, pediatrics, and diabetic foot care.
Assessment: This book effectively presents an introduction to common foot disorders seen in podiatric medicine and primary care. It can be used as a valuable resource by students, residents, and primary care physician. Although not a comprehensive textbook, it has well presented sections on rearfoot and forefoot disorders, diabetic foot care, lower extremity trauma, podopediatrics, and sports medicine.
