Synopsis

In an interdisciplinary communication theory study, Holmes (Monash U., Australia) sets out the implications of new communications technologies for media studies and the sociology of communications. He challenges the historical proposition that a second media age, exemplified by the Internet, has overtaken or converged with an older age of broadcast media, but does recognize the value of distinguishing between the two architectures—broadcast, and interactive networks—when analyzing media. Indeed the distinction between medium and content, between media and messages, is a recurrent theme. Annotation ©2005 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
