School Library Journal

Gr 6-9 A chronicle of those professions which have entertained, enthralled, and amazed people since the beginnings of civilization. Examined here are actors, athletes, dancers, musicians, puppeteers, racers, and variety performers such as clowns, jugglers, magicians, etc. Each profession is treated to a fairly detailed overview of its origins and developments through modern times. A great deal of emphasis is placed upon the Greek, Roman, and medieval European cultures, although several sections (notably ``Actors'' and ``Dancers'') do include some detail of Eastern civilizations. Western bias aside, this book does a competent job of providing a historical view of these performing professions. The bland and somewhat dry writing style discourages casual browsing, but student researchers with some knowledge of these careers should find this volume useful. A sparse scattering of black-and-white photos and reproductions provide some additional insight. Denise A. Anton, Cornbelt Library System, Normal, Ill.
