Overview

This sixth edition of Community Policing and Problem Solving: Strategies and Practices continues to present community-oriented policing and problem solving (COPPS) from a highly applied perspective, drawing on the authors’ combined 75 years of practitioner/academic experience. Included are more than 50 exhibits and dozens of additional case studies and examples of problem solving.

This sixth edition continues to emphasize the “best practices” with COPPS for addressing crime and disorder. Included are chapters on the evolution of policing, community engagement, crime prevention, changing agency culture, planning and mplementation, policing a diversity society, and futures, chapters specifically address COPPS in domestic and foreign venues. Furthermore, two chapters focus on “what works”with drugs, gangs, and youthcrimes, identity theft, domestic violence, prostitution, stalking, and other selected crimes and special populations. It also showcases new information technologies and other management tools for engaging in crime analysis.

“Learn by Doing” exercises are newly added to each chapter, all of which also contain key terms and concepts, learning objectives, and items for review sections.

In sum, this book provides a comprehensive, practical view of the policing strategy that has encircled the globe and represents America’s approach to combating crime and neighborhood disorder.
