Common LASIK complications such as epithelial ingrowth and flap striae are addressed, as well as the less common but difficult complications of central islands, button hole flaps, LASIK interface keratitis, and irregular astigmatism. LASI K contraindications are also reviewed to demonstrate complex case outc omes.

About the Author, Louis Probst

Louis E. Probst, MD

In 1995, Louis Probst began performing LASIK in Canada with the Chiron 116 excimer laser. Since that time, he has performed over 18,000 excimer laser procedures and 16,000 LASIK procedures using the Bausch and Lomb Technolas 217, Nidek EC 5000, LaserSight LSX, and the VISX Star and S2 Smoothscan excimer lasers. As Medical Director for TLC Chicago and TLC Madison in the United States, and Medical Director of TLC Windsor and Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Western Ontario in Canada, he is one of the most experienced LASIK surgeons in North America. Dr. Probst currently performs between 100 to 200 LASIK procedures per week.

Dr. Probst has also coauthored the LASIK reference textbook titled The Art of LASIK, used by refractive surgeons and eye care professionals worldwide. He has also completed a companion CD with instructional surgical videos to be used along with The Art of LASIK for refractive surgeons. He has published over 40 articles in peer-reviewed journals, written 35 book chapters on refractive surgery, and given over 100 lectures and courses on LASIK. As a leader in LASIK, Dr. Probst has developed several instruments specifically designed for LASIK with the Hansatome and pioneered the design of disposable LASIK instruments.
