From The Critics
Reviewer: Jay M. Pensler, MD(Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine)Description: This book explains and describes the etiology and treatment of craniofacial disorders.
Purpose: The purpose of the book is to serve as a guide for multiple specialists in the treatment of patients with complex craniofacial anomalies, and as a guide for teaching students and patients' families.
Audience: The targeted audience is craniofacial surgeons, associated practitioners (neurosurgeons), and students.
Features: I believe the illustrations are of good quality and pertinent. For the more complex cases there is an overreliance on line drawings. The index and table of contents are useful. The overall structure of the book is good with specific topics being easily locatable within their respective chapters. The book's appearance is attractive and well organized.
Assessment: This book will be a valuable resource for the teaching of residents in plastic surgery. Most of the sections are clearly written, although the quality is not consistent throughout. Several sections, including those on Vascular Malformations and Biology and Craniofacial Development, are particularly weak, but these few deficiencies are offset by the quality of the other sections. In addition, this book will be useful for providing a basic framework for teaching residents and fellows because the book provides a reasonable foundation at the fellow level as an introduction to craniofacial problems and an excellent discussion for those at the resident level.
