Children's Literature - Peg Glisson

What is going on in that heap of dirt? What makes it steam, rustle, smell, and move? These simple questions introduce the science of composting to youngsters. Each double-page spread has two paragraphs of information, a fun fact, and brightly colored illustrations. The text is direct, clearly and succinctly detailing what the heap needs and the roles of insect decomposers, fungi, and bacteria. Back-matter includes a hands-on experiment, additional facts, a glossary and index, a brief bibliography, and directions to the FactHound recommended websites (one of which is not suited to this audience). Harrad's uncluttered, bright illustrations, tempered with an earthy tone, have just enough detail for each mini-lesson. This straightforward presentation covers the basics in an inviting way and will encourage children to work with their parents to create an environmentally friendly compost pile.
