Overview
The early 1980s have shown that the realistic demands of a strong military posture substantially exceed the resources which Western publics are willing to devote in their national security. The second half of the 1980s may be remembered as a period in which the West was forced to reconsider its basic goals and objectives and the mechanisms by which individual Western countries contribute to those goals. This volume proposes the future well-being and security of the West will continue to depend in part on the willingness of the member nations to preserve its combined strength and prosperity.
