Overview

Topics are divided between review material on the mathematics background; numerical-analysis methods such as differentiation, integration, the solution of differential equations from engineering, life and physical sciences; data-analysis applications including least-squares fitting, splines and Fourier expansions. Unique in its project orientation, it features a vast amount of exercises with emphasis on realistic examples from current applications.

This is an extremely useful and oddly published book. It is useful from the viewpoint that a wide variety of applied mathematics problems are presented in a workbook fashion. It is well written, providing a solid introduction to concepts and techniques for solving differential equations, complex variables, curve fitting problems, Fourier transforms, and integral transforms. All concepts are illustrated with C programs, and an appendix shows how these programs can be converted to FORTRAN or Pascal. Too bad this book is not spriral bound so that it opens and lays flat (it is more than a little irritating to try to work through one of the author's excellent exercises and have the book close).
