Overview

The U.S. government is made up of the executive, legislative, and judicial branches. The founders of the United States created these three separate parts to prevent any one group in government from becoming too powerful. Congress is the legislative, or law-making, branch of government. It consists of the Senate and the House of Representatives. This book follows Congress through its challenges and successes from its creation to today.

School Library Journal

Gr 3-6-January examines the office of the president and its constitutional duties, and the individuals who have served as chief executive and commander in chief and their different interpretations of their roles. Congress details the activities of the House of Representatives and the Senate and also describes how legislation becomes law. Of special interest is the section on how citizens can become involved in the process. Next, LeVert offers an explanation of the role of the Electoral College, including a detailed discussion of the 2000 election. Full-color and black-and-white photos, reproductions, and appropriate sidebars enhance the texts. All three books are serviceable teaching tools and useful fodder for reports.-Pamela K.
