From The Critics

Reviewer: robert maiiolo, od(Marshall Family Eye Care)
Description: This book covers complications of contact lenses in a concise, articulate, well documented format. Topics are sufficiently detailed and covered with just the right, relevant information. While I consider myself well versed in the material, I still was able to find a few clinical gems to add to my experiences. I would not necessarily use the book as a reference, but I would definitely enjoy a second read at some future date.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a well written summary of potential contact lens complications. The objectives of the book are well met and, in the words of the author, the book is "clinically friendly."
Audience: The target audience would include students, incipient contact lens clinicians. The author has met his goals. For the experienced contact lens physician, further detail would be appreciated. Yet the experienced contact lens fitter would not be disappointed. Although I am not familiar with the author, he had my attention in the first few pages.
Features: The bulk of the book details the anatomical structures of the eye and the possible complications at each site. The last chapter presented grading scales of the severity of said conditions. I particularly enjoyed the discussions of bedewing and bleb and the illustrations are of great help. Although I did not necessarily felt the need for more detail, there are some topics that could have been further developed.
Assessment: The quality of writing and the detail of the topics are just the right blend. As in any clinical book diagrams, illustrations and pictures are key. For my sake, there can never be enough; pictures always make points more memorable.

Booknews

Efron (clinical optometry, U. of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology, Manchester, England and director, Eurolens Research) offers clinicians a practical account of ocular complications that are induced by, and associated with, contact lens wear. Divided into eight parts, the volume addresses the eyelids, conjunctiva, tear film, corneal epithelium, corneal stroma, corneal endothelium, corneal topography, and grading and classification. Within each section, various identifiable tissue pathologies or conditions are systematically discussed, including signs, symptoms, etiology, pathology, management options, prognosis, and differential diagnosis. Includes a tabular summary to help practitioners locate information on a particular complication in the text. The included CD-ROM contains grading morph movie sequences of contact lens complications.
