Overview
In the United States, lung cancer is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer and the leading cause of cancer death. Even more devastating is its five-year survival rate of only 15.8%. Despite these dismal facts, lung cancer receives little national attention and research and funding for lung cancer lags behind other cancers. The intent of Contemporary Issues in Lung Cancer: A Nursing Perspective is to provide oncology nurses and healthcare professionals with in-depth information on the issues that surround this disease, so that they might impact both education and research and provide better care for their patients.

Reviewer: Melody L. McKinney, DNS, RN(Indiana State University)
Description: This book presents a nursing perspective on contemporary issues related to lung cancer. Topics include: biology, epidemiology, treatment modalities, physical and psychosocial concerns, support programs, and Internet resources. Nurses are urged to become involved in evidence-based practice and to take action to improve nursing's voice and image in healthcare delivery.
Purpose: The book was written as a forum for oncology professionals to explore in-depth issues facing lung cancer patients and to "launch" evidence-based practice in the care of lung cancer patients.
Audience: The targeted audience is experienced oncology nurses and other professionals involved in the care of lung cancer patients. The book would be useful for any individual seeking the current state of lung cancer diagnosis and treatment.
Features: The book is divided into six parts. Part 1 provides the up-to-date information about the epidemiology, risk factors, and biology of lung cancer. Part 2 presents treatment modalities and issues surrounding specific procedures. Part 3 addresses radon exposure and special concerns of lung cancer patients: fatigue, end-of-life care, nutrition, sleep disturbance, depression. Part 4 explores psychosocial issues surrounding lung cancer. Part 5 offers insight into resources for individuals and families facing lung cancer. Part 6 discusses the challenges of today's healthcare professionals and future directions toward evidence-based research and practice.
Assessment: This well-indexed, well-referenced handbook presents a nursing perspective on contemporary issues related to lung cancer. Good information is presented on the biology of lung cancer but more current epidemiologic information is readily available on the Internet. Ample figures and tables augment discussions. Excellent information is presented on treatment modalities including nursing roles. Extensive assessment guides, rating scales, and management strategies highlight chapters on patient symptom management. A timely chapter on emerging health issues related to radon exposure includes implications for research and practice. Case presentations emphasize the significance of hope and individual meaning of illness for lung cancer patients. Other useful features include support programs for lung cancer and tobacco dependence, and a consumer's guide of recommended Internet resources. The book ends with a call for nurses to become more involved in evidence-based practice and lung cancer education, and to actively engage the media in changing consumer attitudes about nursing.
