Synopsis

A kitten longs to be like the big cats until it finds something they can all do together.

Sylvia Firth - Children's Literature

George has put together a brief rhyming tale using only forty-eight words. The idea is to provide a beginning reader with an easily read text. As the title implies, a kitten wishes to be able to accomplish everything that the older cats are doing. While unsuccessful at first, the cat does manage in the end to be part of the group. Because of the extremely limited vocabulary, the story seems stilted and ordinary. The brightly colored pictures do manage to convey the various personalities of the cats and should appeal to young children. This book could be useful in a reading program that does not use basic texts for instruction. But is not really one to be considered as a first purchase. 2004, Children's Press, Ages 4 to 6.
