Overview

By looking at small, specialized habitats, this series brings to life the multiple complexities present in even the most common or simple environments. For instance, a young reader will see the wealth of life that makes its home in a Saguaro cactus and learn of the richness of the life cycles of this familiar desert plant. Each book in the series presents an engaging life story with a wealth of additional information added in detailed sidebars.

The Atlantic coral reef is an important ecosystem supporting thousands of species of fish, crabs, and plant life.

Text and photographs reveal the busy undersea life of a Caribbean Sea coral reef.

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot

Beautiful photographs introduce readers to life on a Caribbean coral reef. During daylight many of the animals roam among the brain, fan, and Elkhorn corals. Their bright colors send warnings or attract mates. Some fish use camouflage to help them hide from or succeed as predators. In the early evening large predators such as barracudas and sharks arrive to feed. It never stops, the reef teems with life twenty-four hours a day and this book provides a nice introduction. Also in the "Habitats" series are Arctic Tundra, Saguaro Cactus, and Douglas Fir.
