Editorials

From The Critics

Reviewer: Elizabeth Carlson, DNSc, RN(Rush University College of Nursing)
Description: This review contains three tests, each consisting of 200 four-option multiple choice questions. The test answers are provided with the rationale, reference from which the rationale was obtained, and an annotated bibliography to assist in further learning. This edition replaces the second edition published in 1991. Due to the editor's intention to more closely align this review with the Core Curriculum for Critical Care Nursing, this edition has been designated as the fifth edition to correspond with the fifth edition of the main text. There is no third or fourth edition.
Purpose: The purpose is to serve as a study guide for nurses preparing to take the CCRN certification examination. It certainly meets this goal as it is closely aligned with the main text and it provides the answers with detailed rationale and reference for each test question. In addition, an annotated bibliography is provided to assist in further study.
Audience: This review contributes to the preparation of nurses planning to take the CCRN exam.
Features: An annotated bibliography is provided to assist in further study. The test parallels the CCRN examination and includes two new features, expanded multisystem content and a matching of the distribution of cognitive levels as seen in the exam.
Assessment: The fact that this review aligns with the main text enhances the usefulness of both books. It can also be a resource for nurses interested in ongoing personal evaluation or a source for test questions for use in educational settings.
