School Library Journal

Gr 6-9-- Patrick examines her subject's life and background and reveals a level of commitment and fortitude equal to that of King's late husband. She maintains that to be the wife of Dr. Martin Luther King and to continue his legacy in a successful manner has required assertiveness and independence among other personal qualities. The author makes a sincere effort to view events and occurrences from King's perspective and not to have her life overshadowed by that of her husband. Balance is achieved as readers are made aware of criticisms levied against King and her views on many contemporary issues are aired. Overall, she is portrayed as an individual worthy of respect and admiration. A center insert of black-and-white photographs adequately illustrates the text. --Jeanette Lambert, LaVega School, Waco, TX
