Synopsis

The author of books on cost-benefit analysis contends that another treatment of the subject is warranted because CBA covers the part of economics that treats how the economy should be changed, and health care is an area that clearly needs reform. Brent (economics, Fordham U., New York) puts into a common framework CBA evaluations occurring in health care and other fields through reinterpreting work done by non-economists. Following an overview of the health evaluation field, he offers case studies (e.g., of the Oregon Health Plan) illustrating principles of CBA and related cost-utility analysis.
