Overview

Violence against women is a serious and very common socialproblem, affecting, according to some estimates, one third of women in relationships. This comprehensive and practical handbook guides the reader through the reality of such violence and different perceptions of it. Allowing his clients to do the talking, the author combines a practical approach with the application of recent research and established theory. The outcome is not just a call for counsellors to have a grasp of practical needs, an awareness of risks, and an empathy and non-judgmental view of clients. It also calls for a radical review of person-centred counselling wherein the skills, values and understanding are all shaped to take account of the power imbalance in violent relationships. Help is seen as covering not just crisis situations but the longer term help and support that so many abused women need, so that they move from being a victim to a survivor. Topics include: The women who still love their violent partners and do not want to leave them - Continuance of difficulties from a past violent relationship to a new one - The effect of the violence upon children - The role of alcohol - Violent men and counselling programmes for them. This book is invaluable for counsellors, social workers, support workers or befrienders involved or likely to be involved in counselling women in violent relationships. DESCRIPTION : Paul Lockley has had over twenty years' experience of working as a counsellor with women in violent relationships, and has written a number of books about counselling including Counselling Heroin Users and Working with Drug Family Support Groups both published by Free Association Books.
