Children's Literature -
Beautiful flowers with colors that stand out from the leafy backgrounds make counting from one to twenty a real treat. In addition to learning the names of the flowers, Arabic numerals, printed text, and an appropriate number of colored circles under each picture will assist young readers in learning to count. It's an enjoyable combination of counting and nature study. 1995 (orig.School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 3 This carefully planned and executed counting concept book is rich in content, easily making it a book that can be returned to again and again. Number concepts 1 through 20 are presented in full-color, high-quality photographs of common field and woodland wildflowers. Each page is dominated by the photograph, in which clearly delineated blossoms are set against rich green backgrounds. Beneath the photograph appears the Arabic numeral; 10 or 20 discs, with a corresponding number of them filled in with the flower's color; and the number word written in capital letters. The photographs are captioned to identify the plant by its common name; a listing of the wildflowers' scientific names and natural locations appears at the end of the book, as does an explanatory note about the photography. Offering pleasure and clarity, this is a book that will be enjoyed by children and can be used in a number of ways by creative educators. Catherine Wood, Shelburne Museum, Vt.Book Details
