A rustling incident landed him in a Nevada prison in 1915, where James turned to his artwork to convince the parole board of his worth. Freed on parole, James went on to write and illustrate 24 books and numerous magazine articles about cowboys, horses and the West. Torn between his attachment to the simple life of a cowboy and the demands of being a popular author, James turned to alcohol for solace, causing him to lose his wife, his ranch, and, in 1942, at the age of fifty, his life.
