Through a rigorous and highly sophisticated examination and interpretation of examples from the history of science, and a critical discussion of good and not so good ideas from recent philosophical literature, Torretti (philosophy, U. of Puerto Rico) sheds considerable (and welcome) light on the means and ends of the intellectual enterprise of physics.
