Overview
Creative expression in later life can be linked directly to successful aging. Beginning with theoretical models of creativity and life-span development, the contributors examine the factors that influence creative exploration: environmental, social, gender, cognitive, and personality. New theories on creative productivity in late life are presented which suggest that the potential for creativity is present in many older adults. Using longitudinal studies and qualitative interviews, the contributors look at the role creativity plays in the lives of elders, and the way that creativity aids in the adaptation to physical aspects of aging, problem-solving, and life reminiscing. A variety of viewpoints are presented from the perspectives of cognitive aging researchers, creativity researchers, and experts in a variety of creative domains. This text is a useful addition to courses in hermeneutics and critical gerontology. The book contains black-and-white illustrations.
Editorials
From The Critics
Reviewer: John S. Lyons, PhD(Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine)Description: This book investigates various facets of creativity as it is associated with the aging process. The chapters are divided into four sections: theoretical approaches, creativity and cognition, creativity personality and gender, and domains of creativity. The definitions of creativity used in the book range from artistic genius to telling one's life story.
Purpose: The primary purpose of this book is to pull together the existing scientific research on creativity and aging. Each chapter generally stands alone in its contribution.
Audience: The majority of the contributors are psychologists, and since the focus of this book is on the description of existing thought and research, then other research psychologists are the primary audience. The book may appeal more generally to any scholar interested in gerontology, development, and creativity.
Features: A number of the chapters effectively use charts, figures, and graphs to illustrate complex points. The chapter on Monet and Degas uses many black-and-white prints of these artists' work to illustrate points. Similarly, the chapter on creativity among older women uses many photographs of original art.
Assessment: This is a well written collection of chapters on a host of subjects related to the interface of creativity and aging. Although the chapters are not necessarily intentionally integrated, together they represent a substantial review of current theory and research on a set of related topics that range from genius to creativity in everyday life.
