Overview
Box (public administration, U. of Nebraska at Omaha) applies the critical theory of the Frankfurt school (as developed by Jürgen Habermas and Herbert Marcuse) to the practice and theory of modern public administration. After presenting the case for the application of critical theory, he summarizes Marcuse's work related to democracy, the warfare state, the "research of total administration," and gender. How critical theory influences questions of discourse processes with citizens, the impacts of administration on the public, and the problem of finding a public able to govern themselves is then taken up. The remaining chapters address wider questions of how those in public administration should conceptualize their larger project. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, ORBook Details
