Overview

In the months since September 11, millions of Americans have belatedly awakened to the fact that they ignore the world at their peril. A sudden surge of interest in international affairs represents a dramatic turnaround from a decades-long decline.

Critical Views of September 11: Analyses from Around the World provides deep perspective on the changing world order in the wake of the attacks and the war in Afghanistan. An unprecedented array of scholars from around the world offer candid and unsparing views of the international order and America's role in the world from the vantage of Africa, Europe, South Asia, East Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America. In so doing, they provide fresh insight into the varying perceptions of the September 11 attacks and the United States' response. The essays analyze such issues as security, terrorism and international order, globalization and economic liberalism, and the new social and cultural challenges stemming from the terrorist attacks.

Author Biography: The Social Science Research Council was founded in 1923 to advance knowledge in the public interest. An independent, nonprofit organization, it supports interdisciplinary research, education, and communication throughout the world.

Synopsis

Thirteen contributions from international intellectuals present a multidisciplinary examination of how the world has changed since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Topics include the global context in which the attacks took place, the need to protect civil liberties while combating terrorism, and U.S.-European cooperation. The front cover, with large cutouts apparently representing the twin towers of the World Trade Center, seems especially vulnerable to damage. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Publishers Weekly

Scholars and critics of isolationism will welcome the 13 sophisticated essays, primarily by non-U.S. analysts, that Social Science Research Council program directors Hershberg and Moore have assembled here. Many of the essays are expanded versions of submissions to a Web site that SSRC established in the wake of the tragedy; all consider the effects September 11 for U.S. foreign policy and for the rest of the world. Though the contributors (Francisco GutiErrez SanIn, Mahmood Mamdani, Didier Bigo and others) express differing views on religion, terrorism and globalization, they all seem to point to the importance for humankind of the Americans' getting [their policies] rightas the whole world watches.
