Overview
In 16 articles originally published between 1978 and 1997 and one previously unpublished, Hamilton examines three aspects of relations between western Europe and the neighboring civilizations in the eastern Mediterranean. First he looks at the settlement of westerners in the Crusader states in the 12th and 14th centuries, with treatments of women, kings, the Church, churchmen, and the contemporary western understanding of Islam. Then he explores Catharism as an eastern dualist heresy that took root in western society. Finally he considers how, after the conquest, the crusaders transformed the shrine churches of Jerusalem and the rest of the Holy Land into Catholic Holy places, and assesses the impact on the buildings of medieval tourists visiting as pilgrims.
