School Library Journal

Gr 3-6-- A brief but adequate look at the subject. Stevens delineates the differences between cults and religious groups, and also discusses the use of deprogramming and exit counseling to rescue members from destructive cults. The Unification Church of Sun Myung Moon, the Manson family, Scientology, and Swami Rajneesh are among the groups cited. Although the prose is clunky, with little polish or finesse, the format is attractive, with large print and frequent full-color and black-and-white photographs. However, the captions do not always let readers in on what is depicted. Included are a list of organizations from which to get further information and a combination glossary/index, which does justice to neither. --Ann Welton, Thomas Academy, Kent, WA
