In this examination of the effects of language teaching on students' attitudes toward the people and culture involved, qualitative and quantitative methods were applied. Outside-class influences were modeled and taken into account, as were varied teaching methods or styles. The results suggest to the authors that language teaching itself has limited direct effect on cultural understanding; improvements, including more deliberate and directed approaches to foreign culture teaching, are proposed.
