Overview

Looking around, Curious George realizes that he sees shapes everywhere. Slide the tabs sideways or upward to discover what shapes George sees when he looks at a soccer ball (circle), a painting (square), a jack-o’-lantern (triangles), a wagon (rectangle), a balloon (oval), a kite (diamond), a star, and a heart. Also includes suggestions on how parents and children can take a “shape walk” around their neighborhood.

Children's Literature

Shapes. My quick research showed more than 150 board books addressing shapes published since 2005. It is a popular subject. The added attractions in this book are the slides built into the pages. The cover shows a variety of shapes, and they are all featured in the book. The circle is represented by a soccer ball, but when the side is pulled out it is just a simple blue circle. The square is a picture frame and again the slide reveals a simple square the same color as the background on the page. In a bit of an unusual switch, the triangle is represented by the eyes and nose on a jack-o-lantern. Other unusual choices are the body of a red wagon for the rectangle and a balloon to represent and oval. The remaining shapes are more typical—kite for the diamond, a golden star and a heart shaped candy box. At the conclusion of the book, George encourages kids to walk around the neighborhood to spot as many shapes as they can. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
