Purpose: The purpose of this book is to provide a comprehensive survey of major issues at the forefront of modern developmental biology. Special emphasis is put on mechanisms of development in a variety of model systems.
Audience: This book is aimed at researchers in vertebrate and invertebrate developmental biology, particularly those interested in gamete physiology, fertilization, and reproduction. A highlight is the unique chapter on developmental programs in bacteria.
Features: The different chapters have a nice balance of illustrations. The reference section for all chapters includes 1995 references, and some chapters include 1996 references.
Assessment: This volume of current topics in developmental biology is very diverse. It covers the gametes of invertebrates, vertebrates and flowering plants, as well as developmental programs in bacteria. Chapters are included on the role of sex determination genes in the development of the mammalian reproductive system, male pronuclei, sperm-egg interactions during fertilization in Drosophila, gamete ion channels, and the regulation of skeletal myogenesis. All of the chapters are well done and will serve as good reviews of the topics. This volume is highly recommended for libraries.
