Overview

Cytokine Molecular Biology concentrates on molecular biology techniques for the study of cytokines, cytokine receptors, and cytokine driven processes. Updated topics from the previous edition are: the cloning and expressing cytokine genes;; the detection of cytokine mRNA; receptor binding studies; the PC-specific phosphslipase C and sphingomylinases. In addition, new topics covered are the purification, sequencing, and synthesis of cytokines; studying cytokine gene polymorphisms; the use of proteomics in cytokine research; and the Jak/STAT and MAPK signalling pathways. Written by experts in the field, Cytokine Molecular Biology and Cytokine Cellular Biology form a comprehensive and essential guide to cytokine research.

The book contains black-and-white illustrations.

Reviewer:Eugene A Davidson, PhD(Georgetown University School of Medicine)
Description:The major focus of this book is on molecular approaches and each chapter contains a number of laboratory protocols.
Purpose:This book is intended to serve as a practical laboratory manual for investigators interested in cytokines.
Audience:Graduate students, fellows, and investigators are the intended audience.
Features:The initial material covers cloning and is followed by a section on polymorphisms in IL-1 and TNF genes. Common techniques of general use such as Northern blots, PCR and RNAse protection are reviewed. The bulk of the latter half is devoted to signaling pathways, including receptor interactions, and a brief discussion of transgenic animals. There is also a brief chapter on purification of cytokines. There is a list of suppliers provided as an appendix.
Assessment:In general, the protocols are straightforward and are the major asset of the book. It appears that procedures such as implantation surgery used for transgenic animal production is not something readily achieved by following a written description. Several of the other protocols seem trivial (Coomassie staining, for example). Nevertheless, investigators in this area will find the book a useful laboratory adjunct, as will students and fellows.

Booknews

Cytokines form a chemical signaling language in multicellular organisms that regulates development, tissue repair, inflammation, and the immune response. This laboratory manual covers molecular biology techniques for the study of cytokines, their receptors, and related processes. Some of the approaches include the sequencing and synthesis of cytokines, cloning and expression of cytokine genes, and gene modification in transgenic and mutant mice. New topics covered in the third edition include proteomics, conditional deletion of cytokine genes, measurement of intracellular signaling via the Jak/STAT and MAPK pathways, purification of cytokine proteins, analysis of cytokine gene polymorphisms, intracellular fluorescent staining for cytokine protein, and biological assays for the newer cytokines. and its companion volume, , were previously published in one volume as .
