The 14th Dalai Lama must be among the most photographed personalities alive, but this collection, published to coincide with His Holiness's 70th birthday on July 6, stands apart from all the rest. Over the course of three years, during which he took 30 trips to various parts of the world, award-winning photojournalist Bauer was given unprecedented access to the legendary figure. Included here are photographs of meetings with dignitaries and heads of state, rituals and services, as well as simple images of the Dalai Lama at his private residence in Dharamsala. The essay by Ricard (The Monk and the Philosopher) and a three-way conversation among His Holiness, Ricard, and Bauer make nice additions, as does the time line of Tibetan history that closes the book. Because the images are arranged in a largely nonchronological and nonthematic way, repeated and random viewings bring new rewards. Though not an essential purchase, this book is valuable as a historical record, and its original design and high standard of production make it a desirable choice for most libraries.
