Overview

In 1619 in Scotland, a time of intolerance, when Catholics and Protestants disagree and healers are hanged as witches, a child born of mysterious parentage is given to fisher folk to raise as their son. Dughall grows up in a family bound by love and morality, becomes a healer, and displays psychic abilities. His life is torn apart when he's claimed by his real father, a cruel and powerful lord who tries to mold him in his image. Dughall must define himself, in the midst of a struggle between an Earl, a Duke, and the family who wants him back. All the while, he's determined to marry the lass he left behind. Dark Birthright is a story reflecting the political, religious, and cultural dynamics of 17th century Scotland. It paints a picture of life in the Highlands, as well as the fisher folk and a village of witches worshipping the Goddess

About the Author, Jeanne Treat

Jeanne Treat is the great-granddaughter of a Native American medicine woman, and she also has ancestry from Scotland, England, and France. To research this book, she traveled to Scotland to visit castles, seaports, and stone circles, and talk to local historians. To make it authentic, she investigated ancient earth-based spiritual traditions and spent time with their modern counterparts. Dark Birthright is the first book in a trilogy. A sequel will follow in late 2007.

Once I started, I could not put it down. It has many different facets, not only the history but also legend, myth, and a touch of ancient Celtic beliefs, characters that really seem to be from that period, family intrigues and the mystery of how the relationships developed to create the personalities of the principal characters. One becomes a part of this book quickly and it is a very good read! I highly recommend this book.

Dark Birthright is an amazing read. For me Blackheart was the best damn character, a cruel and powerful man who saw what he wanted and took it.....with style! As I ventured further into the book, I found myself submerged deep in Scotland’s mysterious past, a past wrought with witchcraft, romance, desire and violence and I must admit I loved every minute of it! I do believe that Dark Birthright gives the reader an insight into what 17th century Scotland would have been like.

If you love the stories that take place in the mists of the Highlands, you will treasure this historical novel, and you will quickly fall in step with the characters that struggle and strive to eek out a corner in life for themselves and their loved ones. The writing is done beautifully, and Mrs. Treat is able to capture the lyric undertones that make up the melody of life in those days. This book is highly recommended!
