Overview

Between 1987 and 1989, Paul Bowles, at the suggestion of a friend, kept a journal to record the daily events of his life. What emerges is more than just a record of the meals, conversations, and health concerns of the author of The Sheltering Sky, but a fascinating look at an artist at work in a new medium. Characterized by a refreshinng informality, clear-sightedness, and passages of exquisite prose, these pages record with equal fascination the behavior of an itinerant spider, a brutal episode of violence in Tangier marketplace, and the pageantry and excess of Malcolm Forbes' 70th birthday party. In Days, a master observer of the foreign and obscure turns his attentions toward his own daily existence, giving us a startlingly candid portrait of his life in contemporary Tangier.

Editorials

Library Journal

Bowles's laconic journal records a series of private and public events in the North African city he has made his home for decades. The writer and composer notes the onset of old age, his ambivalence toward fame, and the degradation of the Tangerine cityscape: ``Good things do not continue.'' Meanwhile, members of the Rolling Stones visit to record with native Jajouka musicians, and Bowles admires Liz Taylor (``solid and luscious'') at Malcolm Forbes's lavish party. Those familiar with Bowles's work will read quite a bit between the lines, but those who know only the recent movie version of his novel The Sheltering Sky ( LJ 11/15/49) will find little of interest.-- Grove Koger, Boise P.L., Id.

The author of The Sheltering Sky records with equal elegance a spider's behavior, a violent episode in the Tangier marketplace, the excesses of Malcolm Forbes's 70th birthday party, & the comings & goings of fans, stars, & film crews. B&W photos.
