Overview

As the creepy little town of Nightshade prepares to celebrate its 200th anniversary—on Halloween, of course—many of its paranormal residents are receiving mysterious blackmail letters. Psychic teen Daisy Giordano and her sisters set out to find out who is behind the threats. But launching an investigation isn’t easy for Daisy with her overprotective father watching her every move. Though she’s is happy to have him back after the years he spent being held captive by an anti-paranormal group called the Scourge, Dad is having difficult time adjusting to home life—and the fact that his little girl is now a senior in high school. He even disapproves of Daisy’s boyfriend, Ryan. Can their relationship take the strain?

And Daisy’s got even more on her plate: A talented amateur chef, she has won cooking lessons with celebrity chef Circe Silvertongue. After nosing around (with a little help from Circe’s pet pig), Daisy begins to suspect the temperamental chef’s secrets aren’t only in her ingredients. . . .

The fourth installment in this favorite series is full of surprises and scares!

VOYA

Daisy Giordano is having trouble keeping her senior year at Nightshade High low-key. Facing pressure from an overprotective father, the possibility her boyfriend, Ryan, may be going out of state to college, and helping her best friend, Samantha, plan for their town's 200th anniversary, Daisy is feeling the strain. Top that with her psychic powers and her need to help solve the mystery of blackmail letters being sent to the town's paranormal residents, and things really get complicated. Daisy is just a normal girl (if you overlook her psychic powers) who wants to spend time with her boyfriend. She must find a way to be patient with a father who has been out of her life for years after being held captive by the Scrouge, an evil paranormal group. Daisy also loves to cook, but the joy of winning cooking lessons from famous chef Circe Silvertongue takes a turn when she experiences Circe's fiery temper up close. Dead Is Just a Rumor is the fourth book in a series by talented author Marlene Perez. Perez makes quick work of setting the scene and helping those new to the series get caught up, all the while drawing you into the lives of the characters from the town of Nightshade. This is a well-written, easy read that will appeal to reluctant readers and those wanting to read something good in a short period of time. Reviewer: Juli Zimmerman

Children's Literature - Kathie M. Josephs

The people in the small town of Nightshade are excited with the expectation of an up-and-coming fabulous celebration for the two hundredth anniversary of their city's existence. Many inhabitants of this small town are paranormals, which adds more suspense to the story. These residents start receiving strange blackmail letters. While this is going on, Daisy Giordano, a psychic, and her two sisters decide to see if they can find the source of these letters. Unfortunately, Daisy's father keeps tight reins on her which makes her investigation difficult. Just getting through high school is tough enough for anyone. But discovering, through her investigation, that her boyfriend may go to a college far from Nightshade, and that she has won a cooking lesson with a celebrity, is just about more than she can handle. This book is an easy read and would be perfect for some a reluctant reader or anyone who just likes to finish a book in one sitting. Since this is the fourth installment of the series, I was a bit concerned about being able to figure out what was happening, but the author does an excellent job with giving enough information at the beginning to get the reader up to date with no problem. This is not really a scary book and is just OK. Reviewer: Kathie M. Josephs

ALAN Review - Lakendra Scott

The fourth novel in the Dead Is series sees Daisy Giordano solving a number of supernatural mysteries plaguing the town of Nightshade. Daisy's mysteries commence amidst the return of her father from his abduction and the near conclusion of her high school career. The internal conflict Daisy faces as she enters a new chapter of her life is relatable, but expressed in an often simplistic and predictable manner. This novel, ideal for pleasure reading, would not be suitable for the classroom due to the lack of complexity and depth. Perez's attempts to describe three mysteries and do justice to the emotional turmoil Daisy experiences within her family and with her werewolf boyfriend leave much to be desired. While the relationship between Daisy and her father might spark discussion about child—parent interactions, overall the novel is more suited for the beach, not the classroom.
