Reviewer:Kathy Tinius, EdD(Texas Woman's University)
Description:This book, written for health and social care professionals, focuses on end-of-life-care for the "disadvantaged dying" within the context of environmental and social differences. Each chapter is written by an expert in that field and frequently uses a case study approach that allows the reader to apply knowledge to practice.
Purpose:The purpose is to provide medical professionals and other end-of-life care givers an insight into a variety of social circumstances and inequities (poverty, social class, gender, ethnicity, disabilities) and how they affect dying people, their care, and their families. The book meets these worthy and timely objectives.
Audience:It is written for clinicians and practitioners from all areas, as well as policy-makers and all those committed to providing good end-of-life-care. The authors and contributors are credible authorities in their fields.
Features:The book is divided into 12 chapters, each one focused on a specific social aspect and how it may affect the ill and dying. The book focuses on the needs of those considered disadvantaged whether by finances, ethnicity, or age. Other chapters highlight the needs of the offenders, sexual identity, the disabled, and refugees. Specific attention is given to the financial concerns related to health and dying and the role of carers and caregivers. Case studies are very effective in making the learning relevant and transferable.
Assessment:The book is structured in such a way to make it easy to stay focused and to apply new information to prior learning. It can prove very useful to not only medical professionals but all those seeking quality end-of-life-care for all. The extensive references at the end of each chapter provide valuable resources for those seeking further information.
