Overview
Although admitting his opposition, Bohm (criminal justice, U. of Central Florida) seeks to provide all sides of the argument in this work intended to serve as a textbook for a undergraduate course on the death penalty. He first presents factual information on the history of the death penalty in the United States; the role of the Supreme Court in shaping the practice of capital punishment; the similarities and differences of the state, federal, and military death penalty systems; and the types of execution methods employed in the United States. He then turns to the pro and con arguments including general deterrence of crime, incapacitation and the economic costs of capital punishment, miscarriages of justice, and arbitrary and discriminatory application. A final chapter explores the history and current state of American death penalty opinion. Annotation Β©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, ORBook Details
