Overview

"An inside view of how politics work in the era of Deng Xiaoping. Ruan Ming, who participated in the initial phase of China's reforms, has written an engrossing account of behind-the-scenes political machinations. Library Journal

China, the land of extremes-with its beauty, a large population, and a general air of mystery-was becoming a tourist destination until June 1989, when protesting students in Tiananmen Square were violently suppressed by the Chinese Army and visitors began to wonder about the leadership of China under Deng Xiaoping. Ruan, an insider at the highest levels of the Chinese government, was a part of the liberal reform movement. Purged from the Chinese Communist Party, he fled to this country and is now a visiting scholar. Readers will gain a grasp of the modern political machinations at work in China, plus the struggle between the liberal and conservative elements of the party. Two valuable portions of this book are the glossary, which contains a small Who's Who of Chinese officials, and a historical chronology that includes the years 1976-93. Recommended for academic libraries and large public libraries with strong Chinese collections.-Dennis L. Noble, Sequim, Wash.
