This interesting new book is presented in the format of questions and short answers concerning every important aspect of dentistry, from patient management and treatment planning to legal issues and ethics in dental practice. The purpose is not to substitute many excellent dental textbooks available, but to assist the readers with additional reading in areas that they might find stimulating. This book was written to meet the needs of students, residents, and practitioners who would like to test and improve their knowledge about dentistry. The illustrations are very informative, especially in the oral radiology chapter. The bibliography is extensive and up-to-date. This is a very useful book for students and practitioners in the dental field. It contains important questions about dentistry. Each answer is clear and concise. The reader, also, will notice a smattering of humor throughout the book that makes reading enjoyable. It is highly recommended for students and dentists who are getting ready to take the boards.

This edition is unique from all other dental resources that I have used because of its question and answer format. I did not own the first edition published in 1996, but I borrowed it and photocopied sections of it to study for my national dental board Part II exam. The purpose is to hand down the pearls of the different aspects of dentistry in an informal, non-textbook format. This is a worthy objective and it is met. Although I believe that this book was written for the dental student, the question/answer format makes it very convenient for practitioners who study review information less frequently than the full-time student. The format maintains the reader's interest. The 18 contributors of this book are well known in their areas of dentistry. This is an overview and summary of the pearls of information from the last two years of a dental school education. The best feature is that if you were to read it for 20 minutes a day for two weeks you would have refreshed your memory of traditional education. There is a great "bang for your buck" benefit for a practitioner that would not be found in a textbook. Shortcomings include the challenge of finding a specific answer to a specific question; you would have to refer to a textbook. This is a very useful review of important material for a full-time student or practitioner. A wealth of information can be acquired over short periods of time not possible with a textbook. The question/answer format maintains the reader's interest. The continuing innovation of dental materials and with them new techniques makes a new edition beneficial. This book is of the highest quality and usefulness as a brief review of a wealth of information. Icannot compare it with other books of its kind because I am not familiar with other review books for dentistry. A second edition is justified.
