Synopsis
"In the summer of 1938, nine year old Walter Roth arrived in Chicago with his immediate family after they escaped Nazi Germany. Growing up in Hyde Park, he was a typical American immigrant teen. However, a trip in 1953 to the town in which he grew up in Germany proved to be a turning point on what would begin a lifelong journey exploring his roots. His next visit to Germany accelerated his research relating to his ancestors and the Roth family history in Germany. This project grew into an objective of creating a memorial in Walter's village to commemorate the Jews who had been murdered during the Holocaust. Walter explores this history, specifically that of his family, through memories, experiences and dozens of letters from his family trapped in Germany. He looks at growing up in Chicago as a Jewish immigrant with relatives in Germany and the effect that had on his family living in Hyde Park. He also discusses his continued involvement with his village, Roth, and his trips with his wife, children, and grandchildren to explore his family's tragic past"--Page 4 of cover.Book Details
