Every day immigration officials in America and Canada detain numerous illegal aliens. These illegal entrants are incarcerated, heard by immigration officials, and then deported back to their country of origin. In other instances, immigrants are found to have prior legal convictions that preclude them from staying in North America. Some aliens are believed to be politically subversive and they too are taken into custody and deported. In Deported Aliens, Staeger highlights the way that government officials in Canada and the United States approach the difficult issue of illegal immigration. In an age of increasing security risks because of terrorism, governments concerns about illegal aliens have heightened. In this illustrated work readers will learn about the history of immigration to North America, border patrols, legal problems for illegal aliens, and the ways immigrants fight to remain in their newly chosen homelands. As part of a multi-volume series entitled "The Changing Face of North America," this book describes the struggle of immigrants to live where they are neither welcome or legal. This is an informative book and one that could find a reasonable place in a school or class library. 2005, Mason Crest Publishers, Ages 12 up.

Gr 8 Up-Covering both the U.S. and Canada, these titles provide fairly detailed treatments of their subject matter. The introduction and foreword are repeated in each volume. Aykroyd and Staeger then devote chapters to where individuals have come from, with both discussing Cuba and Haiti, and Refugees also spotlighting Indochina, the Middle East, and Europe. Much of the material is similar, although Asylees contains chapters on the law and process of attaining asylum. Deported Aliens delves into methods of controlling the flow of undocumented immigrants, deportation proceedings, and alternatives to removal. All three books are current and clearly written, with a minimum of minor errors. Boxed material, bar graphs, and sepia-toned or full-color photographs contribute to a pleasing, open format. However, some of the images seem to function merely as filler. Consider Refugees over Asylees if budgets are tight; all three books present solid report material.-Diane S.
