School Library Journal

Gr 3-6-In the wake of the "Goosebumps" (Scholastic) juggernaut, there are dozens of horror/mystery/adventure titles on the market. This one features solid writing and likable characters. The story, perhaps too grounded in reality, is simple: friends Rosie and Kayo are accidentally kidnapped by thugs hoping to ransom a millionaire's daughter. Using their heads, the plucky duo sabotage their captors and are rescued by police. True to formula, the narrative is fast paced, but lacks the plot and character development of Kehret's Horror at the Haunted House (Cobblehill, 1992), etc. However, the suspense is gripping, the animal-loving heroines are appealing, and the resolution is satisfying. Series readers will enjoy this offering and may find it a tiny step on the road to better reading.Anne Connor, Los Angeles Public Library
