Synopsis

Explains the virtue of determination and describes ways to show it in the home, school, and community.

Wendy Glenn - Children's Literature

Part of the "Character Education" series, this text helps to define and encourage determination as an admirable character trait. It addresses determination in several contexts and settings, including at home, with friends, at school, and at play. It also features Walt Disney as a model of what can be achieved when one is determined to meet a goal. Color photographs on every other page accompany the text and show children modeling different kinds of determination, from learning to swim to caring for a pet to learning to add and subtract to beginning a stamp collection. The text also contains a hands-on section that provides an activity that young readers are encouraged to attempt as they develop determination in their own lives. In this case, the goal is to read a new book each week. Readers are given suggestions about what they might need and do to accomplish this goal. Suggestions for further reading, related Internet resources, and an index are included as well. Easy to read and visually appealing, the text meets its goal of helping kids reflect on the kind of people they would like to be. 2003, Capstone Press,

School Library Journal

Gr 2-4-These books first define an individual trait, explain what it means to exhibit it, and finally describe how youngsters can model this behavior. Each page of text faces a full-page, full-color photo of children demonstrating the appropriate action. Each title mentions a famous person who showed that trait, e.g., Walt Disney in Determination. That quality is defined as having willpower, not allowing your attention to move on to something else. In Leadership, Raatma states that "Leaders help people get work done together. But leadership never is about being bossy." Loyalty mentions keeping friends' secrets and sticking up for them when necessary. The examples take place in a variety of settings such as school and home, and in social interactions. "Hands On" activities are included. These titles could be used for character-development units.-Sheilah Kosco, Rapides Parish Library, Alexandria, LA Copyright 2003 Cahners Business Information.
