Synopsis

This timely book provides a focused approach for developing a challenging yet vital and necessary area for professional success in health care practitioners -- the development of professional behaviors. It addresses the essential elements that are necessary to perform professionally in society, such as dependability, professional presentation, initiative, empathy, and cooperation. These behaviors are developed through the recognition of skills, practice, experience, role mentorship, and evaluative feedback.

The issues of professional behavior are directed specifically toward the health care professional. Emphasizing the importance of these behaviors in students can only help to strengthen them for professional roles. This book utilizes case vignettes, structured learning activities and exercises, and self-reflection and evaluation techniques. It helps to define what professionalism means, and presents strategies to enhance its development.

Structured Activities for Professional Behaviors.

Tiffany Boggis

This 220 page, soft-cover book is an exploration of eleven critical behaviors necessary for one to function in the professional role as a healthcare practitioner as identified by an informal survey of students, clinical supervisors, and academicians. A professional development assessment, case vignettes, and activities and exercises for individual and small group learning are included. Eleven contributors, primarily within the fields of occupational therapy and nursing, contributed chapters. The purpose is to provide an explicit approach for the development of professional behaviors and to assist in assessing and improving one's level of competency of these behaviors. The book is written primarily for healthcare students and may prove to be insightful for beginning practitioners. Educators may find the book design to be particularly useful to introduce students to basic concepts of those behaviors required of professionals while incorporating use of the activities and exercises that are directed towards small group learning. The book is divided into five sections. Professionalism and ethics are introduced. Individual chapter contributors address written and verbal communication, organization, cooperation, and professional presentation, among other professional behaviors. A developmental assessment, which can be used for self-reflection by students within classroom or clinical settings, is presented. Application expands to educator and supervisory arenas followed by learning activities. In the past, development of professional behaviors within the allied health professions has been highly dependent upon role modeling within clinical settings. Clinical supervisors and employeesexpect that new graduates within the healthcare professions arrive with an adequate level of development of professional behavior competency. Within the constraints of current healthcare delivery trends, it is increasingly becoming the role of educators to assure a baseline level of development in professional competencies. Though cursory, introductory information and activities are presented here to help the student gain a beginning understanding of essential professional characteristics to successfully function as a healthcare professional.
