Synopsis
Writing for biologists interested in evolutionary theory, West- Eberhard (Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute) argues that the current emphasis in evolutionary theory on genes as the sole driver of developmental change fails to take full account of the environmental responsiveness of organisms and the role it plays in both individual development and organic evolution. In this synthetic work, she describes how such things as variation and selection within populations, speciation, and developmental plasticity impact evolutionary development.
